There’s an old story of a celebrated pianist whose children would drive their father batty by walking past the family piano and playing exactly seven notes in the ascending scale. “Do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti…” -- time and time again these mischievous kids would leave the eighth note unplayed, leaving their virtuoso father maddened by the lack of resolution, and with no choice but to walk over to the instrument to resolve the octave lest the unfinished melody linger in his musician’s brain. This session will offer practical solutions on how teachers of any course or content area can harness this same unfinished symphony phenomenon when designing lesson plans that their students can’t help but want to complete.
